Plot

A member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe of Lame Deer, Montana Buddy Red Bow (Martinez), a quick-tempered activist, is battling greedy developers. On the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation he tries to persuade the council to vote against a strip-mining contract.

Philbert Bono (Farmer) is a hulk of a man guided by sacred visions. He wants to find his medicine, tokens from the spirits. He trades some marijuana, booze, and a few bucks for his ‘war pony’ – a rusted out, beat up 1964 Buick Wildcat he names ‘Protector.’Meanwhile, Buddy’s estranged sister, Bonnie, is arrested in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Buddy is the only family member who can help her and her children, Jane and Sky Red Bow.

Buddy does not own a car, so he makes the journey with Philbert. They set out on their road trip, and Philbert’s easygoing ways and insistence on frequent stops to pray and eat prove irritating at first to Buddy, but the men reach an understanding as the trip wears on. Along the way, they visit the Black Hills in South Dakota and Philbert reverently leaves a giant Hershey’s Chocolate bar as an offering to his ancestors.

When they finally reach Santa Fe, they meet up with Bonnie’s friend Rabbit. Using inspiration from an old western he sees on TV, Philbert breaks Bonnie out of jail. Their escape almost ends in tragedy, but with a little help they make their way back to Montana.

Based on the best selling book The Powwow Highway by acclaimed author David Seals and reportedly George Harrison’s favourite Handmade produced film.

Disapproving of Casey’s methods, Brian and Charlie wish to leave, and a corrupt auto dealer, Norm, on Casey’s payroll, desiring the same, tells Casey of this. Casey has Norm killed to make an example of him, apparently intending to spare Brian and Charlie.

Meanwhile, Brian meets and begins a romantic relationship with Casey’s waitress Faith Thomas (Camille Coduri), a short sighted aspiring psychology student.

Brian and Charlie ultimately come up with a plan to betray their gang and flee the UK, whilst robbing a Triad gang of their ill-gotten money through drug dealing.

However, Casey, no longer trusting Brian and Charlie, plans to eliminate them at the same time, ordering his hit men, Abbott and Morley, to kill them during the Triad gang robbery.

Faith, having overheard all about the plan, tries to remove Brian from the scene, but fails. Brian and Charlie’s plan to rob the Triads and flee, goes well until their car runs out of petrol, as Charlie had forgotten to refill it.

They flee the Triads, Abbott and Morley on foot and hide in a nunnery, later dressing up as Nuns and introducing themselves to the Sister Superior, Liz (Janet Suzman) as Sisters Euphemia (Brian) and Inviolata (Charlie).

When Casey comes to know about their back-stabbing, he becomes enraged and places a bounty on Brian and Charlie’s heads.

Charles is to wed Deborah Fitzbanks, the daughter of a fellow clergyman. She was only a child when he left, but is now a young woman eager to be married and have lots of children; however, she dislikes being touched by him.

The Bishop of London gives him a new assignment, to set up a mission to rescue the women of the evening who frequent the London Docklands, but cannot offer him any funding.

To assist him, Deborah writes to Lord Ames, the richest man in England. Charles reluctantly calls at their enormous mansion. The place has so many rooms, Slatterthwaite, the longtime butler, constantly has trouble finding his way about. He does eventually manage to bring Charles to the Ameses.

Lord Ames loathes missionaries (among other things), but Lady Ames is inclined to contribute, especially as she finds him attractive (and tells him so).

Somewhat alarmed, Charles tries to leave, but she insists he spend the night.
